I have been reading the posts and comments recently dealing with romance and vampires and I would like to address these two topics and the abomination of these subject’s most dangerous of liaisons.
There have been many retellings of the legend of the vampire throughout history and in many of the more recent versions (meaning the last few decades) the true nature of the vampire has been obscured and polished, for lack of a better word. One very important fact has been almost completely absent from the posts and comments in this blog and is commonly glossed over in the popular media. The fact is that vampires are evil. There is no getting around this fact, no matter how much romance we throw at the situation. Vampires feed on the life force and death of humans. Vampires are EVIL! Vampires will use any means necessary to procure their next source of sustenance, utilizing highly evolved forms of seduction, manipulation and fear. This is an inherent part of their nature. Vampires may have once been human, but in the process of becoming a vampire (by choice or otherwise) the human dies and what is left is a twisted and corrupt creature of the night. Attempting to apply humanistic attributes to a vampire and saying that a vampire can be romantic is akin to saying that Ted Bundy could be charming when he wanted. The latter is said to have been true and the former is probably possible, but who in their right mind would willingly put themselves in a position near either of these beings when the outcome would very likely be dark and painful? Yes, there are depictions of vampire characters where the vampire seems to be trying to overcome its innate nature and the vampire may attempt to cultivate a relationship with a human (or the other way ‘round), but because the vampire is no longer human and its desires and hunger will eventually need to be sated, the conclusion of such a union is nearly inescapable and deadly for the human.
I must confess, I have a great fondness for vampire stories and movies. Some of my favorites are Nosferatu, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Queen of the Damned, Interview With the Vampire and the Underworld movies (hot ass-kickin’ gun shootin’ vampires, eviscerate first/ask questions later werewolves and a Werepire/Vampwolf - a vampire/werewolf hybrid). There may or may not be varying degrees of romance in these movies, but no matter how much there is the true nature of the vampire always comes out in the end, and the end is usually bloody. Of the previously mentioned movies, I would have to say that Underworld is my favorite followed by Queen of the Damned. Both of the lead characters in these movies were strong and alluring female vampires. I have even found myself wondering what it would be like to meet such a smokin’ hot and deadly creature, but I realize what the end would be, my death spiritually and/or physically and that would mean I would have to change who and what I was and why in hell would I do that for anybody?
I have no real interest in seeing Twilight. First, the movie and the actors/characters in the movie have been on vast amounts of tabloid magazine covers leading me to wonder just what type of audience the movie studio is trying to cultivate and what type of message they are sending about the movie. Second (and my ignorance of the movie may show on this), this isn’t really a vampire movie, it’s a chick-flick with an edge of danger (by way of vampire) thrown in to make the romance seem all the sweeter. Third, have you really looked at Mr. Pattinson? I’m nearly convinced it was not a stretch at all for him to “play” a vampire in this movie. He is good looking (or so I’ve been told) and vampires are generally more attractive than the average human, he always looks pale or washed out and he usually seems to be brooding over something or other, all typical vampire characteristics. His portrayal of a vampire in the movie is nothing more than the vampire nation’s latest attempt to lull us all into a false sense of complacency to the very real danger the vampires pose to humans. Any attempt by a vampire to be seen as romantic should be highly suspect and seen for what it is, an elaborate ruse to entertain itself until it grows bored of its game then kills and discards its prey. No, to say that a vampire can be romantic does a great disservice to us all and endangers the entire human race.
I agree 100% Nate. I think we can lay the blame for all this evil undead propoganda at the feet of the Obama administration. I will have to gather my facts, and talk to a couple of my inside sources to give you all more details. I have it on good authority though, that we are just being groomed as feeding stock for the vampire nation and as a slave race for the alien invasion that's coming in the year 2012! My sources tell me these two groups have reached an accord and have a stepped up efforts to bring this about. Their means are quite devious as well!
ReplyDeleteThe first step was getting Obama in office.( He is in fact a zombie and Skeletor's cousin.) Next the same sex marriage bills that are being passed are just to lead up to allowing the marraige of humans to vampires, because the vampire human hybrid is compatible breeding stock for the aliens! And have you noticed all the adds for companies that want to buy your gold and silver? This is a very calculated maneuver to get silver out of our hands so that we will be helpless against the werewolf nation! They are apparently opportunists taking advantage of all this chaos to further their own ends, which are not clear at this time. I really reccomend getting involved in this site folks! This is a place you can get good intel on the nefarious activities of these evil forces.
I have just learned also that the werewolves have aliigned themselves with Al Qaeda, Hezbola, the I.R.A, and M.T.V. I think this is a huge wake up call for us all. Thank you Nate for being courageous enough to bring this subject up. Don't fool yourselves into complacency folks. Open your eyes and look around you. The evidence is there, if you care to look. We will keep you all updated, but we can't fight this thing alone people! It's time to get involved!
Oh My, Jonathan!!! ;-)
ReplyDeleteAmen Nathan!!
ReplyDeleteVery entertaining, Jon. As for Nate (I guess Jon too). I agree about the Twilight thing, and the Pattinson as a real vampire thing - I thought myself that he looks awfully pale (by the way, I do not think he is attractive - I tend to lean toward the older, more "distinguished" types these days). I also have NO desire to read the books or watch the movies, despite all the raving my mother/Victoria does about them. Josh (my son) got into the books a little bit last year, and even watched the first movie a few times. But I don't think he was really that interested, because he ended up putting them down more than halfway through, saying they were just "okay". So, hooray!, not all youngsters are buying into the vampire crap.
ReplyDeleteNate and Jonathan, you two crack me up! Hezbolla??? That's funny! And I thought the IRA was pretty much disbanded now? Well, must watch out for that in the future - they certainly have the pallor to be vampires, don't they? I wonder how Al Qaeda is going to handle being palefaces - they're usually with a nice tan. If the vampires didn't burn before, they will definitely burn now in the deserts of Afghanistan. Oh wait a minute... Twilight vampires don't burn, do they?
ReplyDeleteAs for pale people, yes, I prefer people with a bit of a tan myself and I'm going to have to agree with you 1/2 way about Rob Pattinson. Way too pale. Looks AWESOME in the Twilight movies, but in person, not very attractive. I'm not going to say that he doesn't have great structure or looks, because he does - I just don't think "live" (ha ha ha ha) he does the best with it. So yes, I'd rather see him as Edward. Plus, he's a bit too skinny for me - I like men with MEAT on them! Jacob's more my style (movie 2), except that he's too short. Good thing I've got my own hunk at home, eh?
Megan, I'm just going to say you aren't allowed to have a Twilight opinion until you read the books :-) Better add the first one to your reading list - I didn't want to read it either. And I despise romance novels! At least agree to read the first 3 chapters - then you can put it down. So what do you think?
I would like to add that I used to have nightmares about vampires until I read the Twilight series. I have a very active dream life, which is one of the reasons why I hate Stephen King novels and can't watch scary movies. But now, I am not so much afraid. Nathan, I suppose this proves your point - The Romancing of Evil!
With the current technology available and their own ingenuity and intelligence, are any of us really surprised that vampires have figured out a way to create a complete UV blocker so they can move about in broad daylight?
ReplyDeleteRachel, as for your disliking of vampire stories until the Twilight series, this is exactly the point I was trying to make. They are trying to obscure the danger they pose and their real purpose by presenting themselves as something other that what they are. Evil, just like werewolves, ghouls, banshees, black witches/warlocks, etc.
You guys (both genders) are FUN! I like this blog. Natey - great job. I appreciate you bringing the to the forfront, shining a light and making us more aware. Same for Jon. (Jon, I had to lay my head down on my desk i was laughing so hard - yes, at you - and my papers stuck to my face. I didn't know I drooled when I laugh). Meg - thanks for spilling the news about what a freak I was for the twilight stuff. I wouldn't read the books for over a year after Roni started prodding me to - I told her vampires are a stupid subject. Then I finally did and they were a really good diversion/escape from life as I know it. I'm about 68% over it now. As for Rob Pattinson - look at him again, not as Edward, but in street clothes. Doesn't he look like Jeff T? I saw a picture of RP with his hair very short, almost shaved, like Jeff used to wear his hair. The resemblance was uncanny! I used to think Jeff was goofy-looking. Hmm. Rach - yeh, he is better in Edward getup; but no matter what I still think he is pretty hot. Except that stupid song that was on the soundtrack. Ew. Aunt Victoria/Mom
ReplyDeleteI'm laffin!!!! I loved the Twilight series (Kam introduced me a couple of years ago) Loved the first movie. Delightful, total escapism, and I think Pattinson is a cutie! Heck, he was a cutie as Cedric Diggory! But Jon and Nate, I loved your comments and your perceptions! You guys were always pretty entertaining together, that certainly hasn't changed! Teri
ReplyDeleteI keep calling RP Edward Diggory or Edward Pattinson. Der. Victoria
ReplyDeleteOkay, which song? I have the album, and I loved it of course :-) Are you talking about the two bluesy songs Rob Pattinson sings/plays? I like 'em - they grew on me. Didn't like them at first. Other than that, I like the rest of them too - which one don't you like?
ReplyDeleteYes, he IS HOT! That's why I think he should dress better and perhaps get a bit of a tan. He dresses like a European teenager - I don't particularly care for that style.
He looks like a heroin junky! Am I the only one who sees this!? Maybe I am since I've been around a few in my time. Rachel you could always join the moms for twilight club, though that would be kinda creepy to me. But that would validate me starting up a grown men for Taylor Swift club.
ReplyDeleteRachel - I have the old soundtrack with just the one song, "Never Think." I kinda like the sound of it. I have forever liked songs because of the sound, and often after I've learned what the words were, I've been surprised, shocked, or mystified. One of my top, all-time favorites? Tears For Fears, "Everybody Wants To Rule The World," but the words are goofy. So when I learned what the words were to "Never Think" I said something along the lines of, "Ew."
