Too Many BOOKS!!!!!!!!

Okay, I told myself that I would only post when I am driven to (i.e., I have something meaningful, to me if nobody else, to say). But I just have to say a word about the subject of reading to better one's self.

Last week I embarked upon a journey to do some reading every day. Not just regular reading of novels, but actual meaningful reading. Up until this point I would tell myself and everyone around me that I don't have time to read, what with the zoo-farm and all. But I have decided to actually read.

So it started with one book, the MOTHER of all books, the most important book; the Holy Bible. I decided to start from the beginning. It only took 2 days to get through Genesis, and most of it I actually understand! I'm halfway through Exodus, and I'm still understanding it.

Next, I was loaned a book written by Dr. Laura Shlesinger (whom I CAN'T STAND), titled "The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands". Her points are VERY valid (for me at least), and I totally get her message. It's her delivery method that I hate. But I keep reading because I promised my friends that I would read with an open mind. Again, I totally get the message, but detest the delivery. On I read.

Third, a gift from my dear mother. She originally gave it to me years ago, but I forget the excuses I made to myself on why I couldn't read it. This year she has bestowed upon me "tools" to go along with the book. At least the daily reading is only a few paragraphs.

Next book, probably the most eye-opening book for me so far (read in conjuction with the Bible), "The Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren. I only read a chapter a day (usually 3-4 pages), as the book is meant just for that, to be finished in 40 Days. There is an interesting piece on the first few pages about how God considers 40 days a spiritually significant time frame. It was the number of days he used (several times) to prepare someone for His purposes; i.e. Noah, Moses, David v. Goliath, Elijah, etc. Anyway, AWESOME book so far.

The last book is one I will be starting this evening, and totally off the subject of the above mentioned books. After our Couples Bible Study last night, my best friend's husband and I got off on the subject of farming, self-sustainable living, etc. (There is a reason why he is my husband's best friend, and his wife mine - they are both exceptional people). He "challenged" me to read a book - no given time frame, just read it - then give a "book report" I guess you could say, when I'm done. It is "Five Acres and Independence" by M.G. Kains. I have done similar research and read similar books, so of the four of us, I seemed to be the most suited for reading this book.

Well, that is my daily reading list. So far I'm doing good at keeping up with everything, and staying with the intention. But be forwarned, I will be "enlightening" you all with me ever growing knowledge, whatever the subject may be.

  1. I love that you will be posting about books! I have thought about a particular book that I have bene reading every year for about 7 years. Maybe I will now... Anyway, thanks for sharing your selections.

  2. I just realized that I didn't state the name of the book given to me by my mother. "Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort and Joy" by Sarah Ban Breathnack.

  3. Oh my goodness! I love, love love, that book! That is the one I was saying I have been reading for the last 7 or so years, and it has just changed me, for the better, and it continues to inspire me each new year. I have been tossing around a blog idea based on my experiences from reading it. I hope it is amazing for you. I also love her book "Something more" while not a daybook, still amazing. I have been known to give that book as a gift along with some "simple pleasures" in a gift basket.

  4. This is terrific! After talking with Victoria, I started re-reading the 'pink book' also. Jen, I was going to suggest we both do it again this year...so I guess several of us may do it, huh?

Megan, I'm delighted you get to start reading more. (In your spare time, with the zpp-farm and such)

I just finished reading 'And The Band Played On'
about the aids epidemic. Saw the movie years ago, decided to read the book. Am re-reading 'Excuse Me Your Life is waiting; Emmanuel's Book; 'Prayer' by Ernest Holmes; You Can Heal Your Life (and another one of Louise's;)
'Seat of the Soul' by Gary Zukav; and a couple of others. Am working on reading all the Robert Jordan ones I hadn't read, so I can catch up and read the one just released. Not written by him totally, but completed from his notes, outlines, etc.
But I'm really excited about doing the 'Simple Abundance' again; even after just these first few days, I'm reminded just how calming it was for me before!

  5. Meg - you must get the multiple book thing from your wonderful mother (me - teehee). I usually am reading about 4 books. Right now I am reading The Pink Book (S.A. by SBB), Harmonic Wealth by James Arthur Ray, The Answer by John Assaraf and Murray Smith, Aspire by Kevin Hall, given to me by my friend Charlotte Otteson, The Little Soul and the Sun by Neale Donald Walsch (a little book tht I have put on top to start tonight), and The Odyssey by Homer. About that last one - I have all those 'Great Books' from my dad that I have been hauling around for almost 13 years, I thought that maybe they would do me more good if I actually read them. 6. Oh, Teri and Jen - Megan, Jessica, Roni and I have just started reading The Pink Book. I think we should have a Pink Book Club for this year. You know, email each other with comments about the things we are going through regarding the daily meditations. For instance, 10 years ago the section in April about cleaning out and updating your wardrobe thrilled me and so I did it. I started rushing through it again last August or September, and when I got to that part in the April section, I couldn't get through it fast enough! I love the idea about a blog. I was thinking about a similar one. Wonder if we should each do our own or if we should collaborate (did I spell that OK, Teri or Jen?) on one. Whaddya think? Victoria

  7. Dearest mother, I know you really want to have a pic with each post, but wouldn't a more "flattering" pic be better? Let me search through my archives, I'm sure I can find one. Love you!

  8. I love the idea of a Simple abundance blog, or book club or both. It has been the single most influential book in my life. (with a close second being "A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle). How about each of us taking a week, or day of the week to share our journey on the SA path?

  9. Okay, so Helen Kay fell off the band wagon and either hasn't read this book, or she didn't pass on her wise kernels of knowledge that I should read it. Therefore, I think I'm going to have to go get this "pink" book of yours. Hope I can find it here.

Also, wondering how you can possibly read 4 books at once. That would drive me crazy! You are the multi-tasking queen!

  10. I am already loving the pink book. I haven't been able to get past the title of Dr. Laura's book. I have heard it is a good book but that woman makes me mad, just hearing her rude my poo doesn't stink voice on the radio is enough to make me want to hang my self. It's really not all that bad but she is a word that starts with Female Dog.

  11. Rachel, check out Half.com
you can likely get it for just a few dollars, and just pay a little shipping. the last copy I bought someone, cost me about $3. That included shipping and everything.

  12. I totally agree about Dr. Laura Jes, I was just being nice when talking about her delivery method, but you described it better! LOL! But I am trying to be more open-minded. She does make some good points, if you can read through the crap. Again, bad me. I'm not being open-minded. No more negativity. I'm just going to read a little every day.

  13. I loved all the new comments posted. 1st - daughter dearest (Meg) - I do think a more flattering one would be better. I have a couple in a paper picture, and I am going to have Ashtyn scan and email several pictures, it just hasn't happened yet. Email me one, sil vous plait. (Did I spell that right?) Jen - I'm happy to hear you like the book club or whatever idea. I would be willing to email my thoughts as the year passes. I'm not sure the each take a week at a time would work for me, because you nevre know until it happens what section RESONATES with you that you didn't hardly notice last year. But I wonder if the other ladies are interested. Does everyone have all the emails? Rachel - your mom did get the book. I first bought it just before grandma's 80th birthday. By christmas I had purchased 1 each for my two younger sisters and 1 ea for the two older, and I made fun/large gift baskets with S.A. stuff. Before that year was out I got books for all my sisters, Meg, Grandma, Dorothy, and a friend. I think most of them did not bother reading them. It's too bad, but I guess it doesn't resonate with everyone. Also try Amazon - I get good results with them for used books. And the multiple books? Easy. Please note that if I am reading something like Harry Potter or Twilight saga, I read the pink book, something from either Harmonic Wealth or The Answer, then the rest of my world stops while I read the favored novel. Remember, I don't have a job right now. Jess - I laughed my butt off (that is really what happened to it) about your Dr Laura comment, and you too, Meg. WE are so awsome!

  15. What do you mean you 'will be "enlightening"' us? You HAVE BEEN "enlightening" us since you were 2 :-) I'll be rereading the bible this term in my Bible As Literature class.

  16. Ok, well then how about we post as things resonate with us? I am simultaneously trying to get through the fall section and beginning with January again. I simply can't leave it unfinished as I start it again. And when I get to the home caring portion (either May or July I think) I get so creative! Last year I was inspired to paint anything that didn't move, and do a ton of home projects.

  17. That's funny, Jen. I did kinda the same thing. I started reading in August or Sept. So on Sept 1 I read Sept 1, etc, plus went back to the beginning and read 3 or so pages a day. Took me a couple months to catch up. Yeah - I like the idea of commenting as it resonates is great. I will email you Roni's email. She probably won't respond - she does it sporadically. But she will still appreciate it. Victoria

  18. All I wanted to talk about was Dr. Laura. I was forced to endure her talk show for years, and it was interesting to say the least. I don't really like the way she presents information, or criticizes people. What I do like is that she stands by what she believes in, she is a huge advocate for children and makes no apology to those who get offended by what she says. I really won't listen to her show by choice, but I do have a lot of respect for her. I would challenge anyone who doesn't like Dr. Laura to listen to her for a week straight and I think you will find that she has very good and valid points. Or you will just go mad from listening to her nassally little cackle. Come on, if I could open up my mind, so can some of you haters out there. And remember this, if you allow someone to make you angry all the time, (Even just by the mention of their name.) you have just given them control over you. Perhaps this is why I like to piss people off, I'm a control freak of sorts=D

  19. I agree Jon. Like I said in my original post, I am not a fan of Dr. Laura. She is very blunt and to the point (almost to a fault I guess). But I decided to read her book with an OPEN mind. The more I read it, the more I agree with almost everything she says. I do not have the opportunity to listen to her radio show, but maybe in the future I can. How about making the challenge either listening to her show for a week, or reading one of her books? I just read some passages today in her book that I would love to quote. Maybe I'll save them for a later post.

  20. I agree about Dr. Laura. I don't like rude people, so I can't stand to listen to her. But her delivery needs work. I've seen her chew out someone for the same thing I saw Dr. Phil get on someone - he was just nicer at it. I see no reason why she has to be so nasty, but she usually gets it right. I think she gives women and her profession a bad name - she could do well by being nicer. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar!

  21. We had better be careful with Simple Abundance, or I am afraid Jon will get ahold of it and explain to us the evils that are "Comfort and joy".

  22. Rachel, Dr. Phil is a candy a**. I was forced to listen to that woman daily for over two years, and her delivery is short only with those that just don't get it. It, being her stance on values, morals and children. She has a style about her that is bunt and straightforward. She isn't trying to be pc or make friends with everyone and try to make them feel good. She stands up for what she believes in, if you listened to her enough you would find that she is a very compassionate and strong woman. That is, if you could set aside preconceived notions and try her out with an open mind. Something that I think is impossible for most people. Usually people just listen to hear proof of what they already think or believe. But if we can really let go of our prejudices and truly hear someone, we can gain valuable insight.

So Jen, it sounds to me like your saying you have noticed that there something amiss with the message being presented in your book. Yet you like the book, so you don't want me to read it, because I will apply my dazzling intellect, and keen powers of perception to said book to tell you what the hidden message, or danger inherently written within it's pages is. And your souls would be troubled after I shine the light of truth upon it. Then there would be a big uproar, people would be offended, angry, (because they hate it when I'm right) and I would be labeled all sorts of nasty things.

Sounds like a good time! I will find a copy as soon as I can.

  23. Muwahahahahaha, my plan is working Jon.

So if you could just listen to Dr Phil, and I quote "...really let go of our prejudices and truly hear someone, we can gain valuable insight" then you could see how he helps people, despite his being a candy A**? Ah Jon. ::pats you on head, and walks away shaking my own::

  24. I never said Dr. Phil wasn't beneficial, just as I never said that Dr. Laura wasn't, as Jess put it, " a word that starts with Female Dog." I just wanted to point out that these people are out there to help others. They are different types of people just as we are different types ourselves. I have no real problem with either one, I was just playing devil's advocate. Unfortunately my fondness for shenanigans has made me a target. Everyone is poised and ready to pounce upon any percieved flaw they find with what I say. I should catalouge all these statements and address them one by one, but that doesn't sound like much fun, and I really just wanna have fun! Just like you girls! It's ok Jen. ::pats you on the shoulder as you hang your head sheepishly with a chagrined expression::

  25. Hmmmm.... Jonathan, you assume I have only heard Dr. Laura the one time. Well, assume away - you keep doing it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ahhh, you got me there Rachel. Nice! All I can say is that given the choice I won't listen to any of them. I personally only listened to Dr. Laura because I had to, not because I wanted to. Truth be told, for the first year and a half she was on an afternoon time slot. That was tolerable. Then she came on first thing in the morning, that was pretty hard to take. I am not a morning person, and that little cackle of her's and the over the top bludgeoning attitude, just plain hurt that early in the morning.

But as I stated before, I just wanted to play devil's advocate. I really don't care what either she, or Dr. Phil have to say. My personal favorite self help guru is... Me!
